Getting Started with Oracle Integration Cloud

Kestrel Outdoor Gear Ltd. sells camping and hiking equipment through its own stores and online. It runs finance and HR on Oracle Fusion Cloud, manages sales in Salesforce, pays its staff through its bank, and still runs a warehouse management system on servers in its own data centre.

Today these systems are linked by custom Java and Python scripts written by different developers over the years. Each script handles security in its own way, nobody else can fix it when its author leaves, and a laptop crash once cost the team a week of work.

Kestrel has subscribed to Oracle Integration. Its IT lead has shared the instance URL and sign in details with the new integration team, which has developers from HR, finance and supply chain. Before anyone builds, the team wants to understand the platform and find its way around the instance.

Key Business Requirements

Concept explain how Oracle Fusion meets it. Hands-on configure it in your practice instance.

  1. ConceptKestrel wants its systems to exchange data without developers writing custom code for every connection, so that people who are not expert programmers can build them too. Explain what kind of product Oracle Integration is and where it sits, using Kestrel’s monthly salary payment to its bank as the example.

    Hint:00:10:50 to 00:12:20, and 00:12:20 to 00:13:47See solution

  2. ConceptKestrel needs these connections. Can one integration platform handle all of them?
    • Oracle Fusion modules with each other
    • Oracle Fusion with Salesforce
    • The cloud systems with the warehouse system in Kestrel’s own data centre
    • Salesforce with the bank’s system, where neither side is an Oracle product

    Hint:00:15:48 to 00:17:11See solution

  3. ConceptA salary of 10,000 must not just be passed to the bank. 10 percent goes to the tax department, 10 percent to the insurance provider and the rest to the employee, and each sits on a different system. Can the integration itself work out these amounts, and how many systems take part?

    Hint:00:18:56 to 00:20:04See solution

  4. ConceptMost of Kestrel’s new integration developers are early in their careers. Management worries that the security of each integration will depend on how experienced its developer is.

    Hint:00:13:59 to 00:15:48See solution

  5. ConceptThe IT team wants to know what each developer needs on their laptop, what happens to their work if a laptop fails, and why delivery should be faster than with the old custom scripts.

    Hint:00:17:12 to 00:18:29, and 00:26:22 to 00:26:40, and 00:21:19 to 00:24:05, and 00:29:26 to 00:30:11See solution

  6. ConceptKestrel needs to know who creates the Oracle Integration instance, in which Oracle cloud it lives, and what the developers receive to start work.

    Hint:00:27:25 to 00:28:54See solution

  7. Hands-onBefore building anything, the team must know where Oracle publishes ready-made integrations, so it can check for an existing solution first. Sign in to the practice instance and open that page from the Home page.

    Hint:00:30:12 to 00:32:02, and 00:32:10 to 00:32:31See solution

  8. Hands-onKestrel’s operations manager wants a health check of the instance from its Home page. Record, as they show in your instance today:
    • The error rate of integrations in the last 24 hours
    • How many integrations are active, against the limit for the instance
    • How many emails have been sent, against the limit
    • Whether any connectivity agents are unavailable
    • How much of the File Server storage is used

    Hint:00:32:54 to 00:33:23, and 00:33:24 to 00:34:40, and 00:34:41 to 00:35:07, and 00:35:08 to 00:35:53, and 00:35:54 to 00:36:06See solution

  9. ConceptA finance developer published an integration for testing and now cannot change it. Explain the stages an integration passes through, which integrations count against the instance limit, and what must happen before the developer can edit it again.

    Hint:00:33:37 to 00:34:00, and 00:46:46 to 00:47:51See solution

  10. ConceptHR, finance and supply chain all build in the same instance. Kestrel wants:
    • Each team to work only on its own integrations
    • Inside a team, developers to edit, testers to view only, and functional consultants to see only how the integrations run and their logs
    • A few integrations to stay available to every team

    Hint:00:37:26 to 00:38:01, and 00:38:48 to 00:44:02See solution

  11. Hands-onThe developers need to know where they will build integrations and where they will monitor them. In the navigation menu, find the two areas used to develop integrations and the area used to monitor them, and list the building blocks a development area offers.

    Hint:00:36:09 to 00:37:22, and 00:41:30 to 00:42:02See solution

  12. ConceptKestrel’s integrations will read files from a file server, read and write a database, call web services and send data to Oracle Fusion ERP. Its warehouse partner offers only a REST API and has no ready-made adapter. Which adapters will the team use?

    Hint:00:52:39 to 00:53:19, and 00:53:27 to 00:53:44See solution

Your Task

  • For each Concept requirement, write a short solution: which Oracle Fusion feature meets it and how. Nothing needs to be set up in the instance for these in this session.
  • For each Hands-on requirement, configure it in your practice instance. Start your setup names with your own initials, for example AB_KESTREL, so they do not clash with other learners in the shared instance.

Solution hints are hidden so you can attempt the case first. Ready to check your approach? Show solution hints

Solution by Requirement

  1. ConceptOracle Integration is middleware: it sits between systems and lets them communicate, the way Zoom sits between a trainer and the class. It is a low-code platform, so integrations are built from ready components instead of code written from scratch. 00:10:50 to 00:12:20 For the salary, Kestrel’s Fusion system sends the payment information to Oracle Integration, which passes it to the bank’s system, and the bank pays each employee. 00:12:20 to 00:13:47

    Back to question 1

  2. ConceptYes. Oracle Integration can connect Oracle with Oracle, Oracle with third party applications such as Salesforce, and cloud with on-premise systems. Neither side has to be an Oracle product, and one integration can involve two or more systems. 00:15:48 to 00:17:11

On-premise systems are reached through the connectivity agent, which you meet on the Home page in requirement 8.

    Back to question 2

  3. ConceptYes. Oracle Integration does more than move data: it can apply logic, calculate and enrich data, again with components instead of code. Here 1,000 goes to the tax department, 1,000 to the insurance provider and 8,000 to the employee’s bank, so four systems take part: Kestrel, tax, insurance and the bank. 00:18:56 to 00:20:04

    Back to question 3

  4. ConceptIn Oracle Integration security is built into the platform by Oracle, not written by each developer. A simple test integration and a complex banking integration get the same level of security, so developers focus only on the business logic. 00:13:59 to 00:15:48

    Back to question 4

  5. ConceptNothing is installed locally. A developer needs internet, a browser and access to the Oracle Integration instance. 00:17:12 to 00:18:29 00:26:22 to 00:26:40 All work is saved on the server, so after a laptop fails the developer signs in from another machine and carries on. 00:29:26 to 00:30:11 Delivery is faster because there is no local setup, packaging or deployment, and no code written from scratch. The trainer’s example turns a 10 day build into about 4 to 5 days. 00:21:19 to 00:24:05

    Back to question 5

  6. ConceptThe instance is a service in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Oracle’s cloud, like AWS from Amazon or Azure from Microsoft. A tech lead or project manager creates it once, and then shares the instance URL, a user name and a password with the developers. 00:27:25 to 00:28:54

The trainer shows how to create an instance in the next session.

    Back to question 6

  7. Hands-on

Open the Integration Store 00:31:04 to 00:31:27

Navigation Sign in to the instance > Home > Browse solutions

    • Sign in with the instance URL, user name and password. You land on the Home page.
    • Click Browse solutions. It opens the Integration Store, where Oracle publishes ready-made integrations. 00:31:04 to 00:31:27
    • Check the store before you start any development. Even if no solution matches fully, it shows how Oracle builds similar integrations. 00:32:10 to 00:32:31

In the recording the store page did not load, so you only hear it described.

    Back to question 7

  8. Hands-on

Read the Home page dashboard 00:32:54 to 00:33:11

    Navigation Home

The shared instance is used by every learner, so your numbers will differ from the trainer’s and from other learners’.

    Back to question 8

  9. ConceptAn integration moves from Draft to Configured to Active. Active means published and ready to use. Only active integrations count against the limit of 800 per instance. 00:33:37 to 00:34:00 An active integration opens read only, so the developer must deactivate it before editing it. 00:46:46 to 00:47:51

    Back to question 9

  10. ConceptCreate a project for each team. A project works like a folder with its own access: people who are not part of it cannot open it, and inside it each person gets edit, view or monitor access. Integrations that every team needs are built under Design, where they are available globally. 00:37:26 to 00:38:01 00:38:48 to 00:44:02

The person who creates a project is its owner. An administrator can open every project.

    Back to question 10

  11. Hands-on

Find the development and monitoring areas 00:36:09 to 00:36:31

    Navigation Home > Navigation menu

    • Projects and Design are where integrations are developed. Observability is where they are monitored, with logs written automatically. 00:36:09 to 00:37:22
    • Open Design, then open a project under Projects. Both offer the same building blocks, such as Integrations, Connections, Lookups and Libraries. 00:41:30 to 00:42:02

In the shared instance you can open only the projects you are a member of.

    Back to question 11

  12. ConceptThe team will use the common adapters: a file server adapter, a database adapter, the REST and SOAP web service adapters, and the Oracle ERP Cloud adapter for Fusion. 00:52:39 to 00:53:19 REST and SOAP are generic adapters, so the REST adapter can connect to the warehouse partner because it exposes a REST API. 00:53:27 to 00:53:44
